Ewan writes: “This concert brings together a well-known favourite, Sibelius’s Second Symphony (1901–2), with two wonderful rarities: Henri Tomasi’s Concerto pour trombone et orchestra (1956) and Douglas Lilburn’s Suite for Orchestra (1955). All three are carefully structured works of “absolute music”, yet all three are picturesque and full of vivid evocations, due in no small part to the influence of jazz (in the Tomasi) and folk music (in the Lilburn and especially the Sibelius). There are therefore subtle synergies between these works that allow them to complement one another, despite their varying geographical and historical origins.”
David Bremner has been Principal Trombone of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra since 2002. Prior to this, he was Principal Trombone of the Auckland Philharmonia. He taught trombone at the NZ School of Music for over 10 years. As a soloist, David has performed concertos with the NZSO, including the world premiere of Gareth Farr’s trombone concerto Funambulistic Strains, recorded Lyell Cresswell’s concerto Kaia for Naxos Records, was one of seven featured NZSO Principals in Eve De Castro-Robinson’s The Glittering Hosts of Heaven, and performed Sandstrom’s Double Trombone Concerto with Christian Lindberg. David has recorded with the New Zealand rock band, Crowded House, performed with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, as well as many brass bands across Australasia and the UK.
